Cliveden XC - December 30th

The final, and possibly toughest run of the year at the beautiful Cliveden estate. Despite near-perfect conditions underfoot, times were down this year - was the course a bit longer? Those #!"$%& steps certainly weren't short!

The indestructible and indefatigable Jim Butcher was surely the most impressive Dasher: despite being one of the oldest competitors in the field, Jim beat people 30 years younger than him!

Ahead, almost everyone finished in the top half of their age categories, with Andrea and Amanda performing particularly well to finish 13th and 16th in their respective categories. Gary paced himself very well to finish a good 15th (23rd overall), while Chris Taylor just missed out in 4th place in the M40 category.

Handy Cross XC - December 2nd

Warm sun, cool beer, and a hotel full of models from L'Oreal studios... oh hang on, that was Cyprus. The Chilterns were a little less clement with strong winds, lots of mud and just a few lung-busting hills. Why run? Because you're worth it, of course!

Congrats to all who ran, with the men doing particularly well to finish as 4th team!

Cabbage Patch 10m - October 14th

With the sun deigning to make an appearance for the last event in the Club Championship, and for the post-run pub lunch, there was some excellent running. Mike B came in comfortably under the hour, followed by Steve who threw caution to the wind and stormed to a 5m, 10k and 10m pb in the same race! Wow. James too saw that his marathon preparation is on target with another pb.

First lady home was Lucy, who continued her return to full training and fitness with a solid 70-minute performance. Not too far behind was Denisa, who seems to be steadily improving at the moment.

Special mention should go to Tony who broke the 80% age-grading barrier, the sign of quality running. Such is the veteran standard at the Cabbage Patch though that he was only the 14th MV50!

Do let me know if you got a pb!

Tough it indeed was, with very little fast ground, and quite a few twisty or hilly parts. Sore legs all round today!

There were good results for the club, with the winner, 3 men in the top 10, Lucy picking up 3rd senior lady, and Tom and Elaine finishing second senior man (in 45:57) and woman (in 45:56) respectively in the Tough 5.

Berlin Marathon - September 30th

He just keeps getting faster! No, not Gebreselassie, but Andy Cooney who chipped another minute off his best to run an excellent 2:38:16 at the uber-flat Berlin marathon. To put it in perspective, only two people at the club have run a half marathon faster than Andy does two of 'em back-to-back!

Virginia Water Paddle - August 26th

The earlier start caught out a few people, but it meant cooler conditions and marginally fewer dogs.

The first three men were well clear of the field, and of each other; Chris B pushed from the off and maintained a fast pace all the way round with only 15s difference between the laps; JD gained 20s over Simon Black in the first lap and another 20s during the second, leaving Simon and Steve Hopkins isolated. Behind them came the charge though, with 6 men in the next minute.

Michelle Allmark was clearly the fastest lady, some 6 minutes clear of Kate, who was in turn a minute ahead of Leslie. Amy came next, closely followed by Dee and Kathryn who ran together and managed to run the second lap notably faster than the first.

Swanage Half Marathon - July 28th

19 went mad in Dorset as the Dashers Did Swanage - and then some. It wasn't easy, as the somewhat hilly terrain and, dare I say, "unseasonally" warm weather slowed everyone down. Somehow though, everyone still had energy for the Sunday morning Donkey Derby... photos will be posted soon!

The breakthrough and loudest-cheered result of the day was for Max who was the 2nd lady under 35 (6th lady overall) home in an excellent 1:41:48.

The men won the team prize, with "Bambi" Bradfield 3rd overall, Andy Cooney 6th, Jonathan Davies 9th and James Street 26th.

More details to follow...

Woodland 5 (and a bit) - July 25th

An good turnout on a cool evening, ideal for running. The course was surprisingly water-free after the recent downpours, although there was enough mud to keep the cross-country fans happy.

Simon and Steve continued their rivalry, which Simon comfortably having the better of Steve on this occasion. Behind them, Colin had a good run to come home some way ahead of Doug.

Leading the ladies home was Andrea who looked strong all the way round, but Michelle wasn't far behind.

St Ives Dairy Crest 10k - July 22nd

Simon Black reports... "Me and Kathryn ran a 10k yesterday and despite drinking the night before and a distinct lack of sleep, we both had reasonable training runs. A nice course with a couple of minor undulations, but not what we would call hilly, although a little hot to really push too hard."

Yateley 10k series race 2 - July 4th

It's the first Wednesday in July and it's pouring with rain ... it must be time for the Yateley 10k! Although it was wet underfoot, the rain held off long enough for JD to run an impressive 37:15 p.b to indicate that his marathon preparation is going well.

Behind him, Lee looked fresh and nippy, and Max looked smooth and comfortable thanks to the hard work she's also putting for her forthcoming marathon. Colin ran solidly to finish just a few seconds down on his time at the Wargrave 10k.

Midsummer Munro - June 23rd

Ouch. This one hurts. While it's described as a half marathon, that's measured as the crow flies. As the knackered runner staggers up Box Hill for the 20th time, it's more like 15 miles. The "munro" part of the title comes from the 3000ft+ of climb along the course. If you think our cross countrys are hard, or that Cliveden's steps are not nice to run up, think again!

Comrades Marathon - June 17th

The Comrades Marathon is, quite literally an "up and down" race. 56 miles of very hilly terrain between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, with an "up" year (Pietermaritzburg to Durban, an altitude difference of 820m) and a "down" year (the other way round). Counter-intuitively, the down years are harder. Why? Well, you know how hard it is to walk down the stairs the day after the marathon? Imagine doing two and a bit marathons and running down really steep hills throughout the run. Ouch!

In down years, far more people drop out, and many, many people run a lot slower than in their up runs, so it's a huge credit to Chris Hunt who was a scant 3 minutes slower than last year's run.

Crisis Square Mile 3.5 mile - June 7th

Lucy and Tony took to the streets of the smoke for a picturesque run that took in London's riverside landmarks and finished over the millennium bridge. Not that either had much time to see the sights as Lucy was the first lady home in an excellent 19.29. Tony also had a good run, clocking 18:50

Hmmm, global warming was most definitely not in evidence at this potentially fast and beautiful 10k in James Street's home village. Cold, rain and a wind that somehow conspired to blow straight in your face all the way meant that times were generally down. However, James excelled to record yet another pb as well as being first local runner home. y.t, on the other hand, is still shivering!

Marlow 5m - May 13th

Most people got a little wet, but plenty of people got personal bests over the twisty Marlow course. We also got 4th place in the men's team competition and 2nd in the ladies competition - well done to all involved!

Updated 14/5 to correct some chip times, and the team prizes. The results that I originally put up were straight from Marlow's site, but they corrected them overnight. This will teach me not to get the results up so quickly!!

Three Forts Marathon - May 6th

Chris Hunt writes:

The Three Forts Marathon is 27 miles long, mostly off road and with an overall ascent of 3450 feet. The day was overcast and the wind a bit chilly, but runners
were rewarded with stunning views from the top of the South Downs. Overall pleased with a steady training run of 4:14:58.

Divided Dash - May 1st

Ok, so Max was right - I have put the results online before going to bed (but only because I'm not sure I'm getting out of it tomorrow!).

Well done to our winning team (after handicapping) of Trystan Lakin, Jo Griffiths, Chris Nathan and Simon Black who finsihed a scant 20s clear. The fastest man after handicapping was Elliot Hendy (by 2s), with Jo Griffiths stealing the ladies title by a single second!

The fastest team overall was team 11, consisting of Neil Potter (twice!), Sharon Helsby and Denisa Polcerova, who covered the 10k in a sprightly 37:40, almost a minute ahead of the next team. The fastest man was Simon Black in 8:43, and the fastest lady was Jo Logie in 9:06

All the results are available in this Excel spreadsheet.

Flora London Marathon - April 22nd

Congratulations to everyone for their achievement today. Running a marathon is no small task!

Dave Priddy has very kindly taken the time to put together a spreadsheet with some analysis of this year's results, with a comparison to the previous year where possible. He also did this in 2005 and 2004 if you'd like to make comparisons.

If you are missing from this list of results, it's because either the results system isn't returning your result or I am unable to disambiguate you from the list of published results. Please email me using the link above so that I can correct things!

Nigh on perfect conditions (apart from a 9am start, which is a tad early for me!) led to a 87 of the 349 runners in the field setting a new p.b., and with only 3 Dashers failing to record a new best, surely one of the most successful 5k races that the club has ever attended. Bushy Park 5k timetrial - March 24th

Everyone ran well on a cold morning where a stiff breeze between 2 and 4km kept times down a little.

Frimley Park 10k - March 18th

It was cold, it was blowing a bit, and it was a pretty hilly course... but Mike gambolled along to a fine 2nd place and a decent time, and then jogged back to accompany Mr & Mrs Black over the last few kilometres of an event that's growing in popularity.

The men finished 6th team, while a poor showing from the ladies meant that they finished a poor 11th. Only Kate was brave enough to venture to Jane Austen country, so well done and thank you to her!

Tough Guy - Jan 28th

Proving that there are people madder in the world than you, Simon Black and Mike Bradfield travelled to the wilds of Staffordshire to take part in what is quite simply a madly hard cross-country cum assault-course cum torture event (see www.toughguy.co.uk for the full grim details).

Both survived with all their limbs, but unfortunately Simon was pulled out with hyperthermia after the 200th water obstacle!

Pictures are here.

Tadley XC - Jan 7th

Despite many people claiming to finish lower down the field than normal on a cold morning, and despite quite a few people deciding to run an extra few hundred metres, and despite Gary only jogging round, we had one of our best results of the season as we finished 5th team overall!

Cliveden XC - Dec 31st

For a while it looked like Mike B might repeat his victory of a few years ago on the beautiful but challenging Thames-side course. Alas, a lack of race fitness and a recent cold took their toll and he was forced to jog home.

It was the veteran men (sorry Chris, Glenn!) who led the way home, with Chris Taylor finishing a fine 26th. Glenn came in a couple of minutes later, well clear of James Street, Mike B, Chris Hunt, Doug and Ross.

For the laydees, Mandy and Kate both had good runs to finish well up the field. There was good bunching behind them, as Mike May came in ahead of Brent, who passed a very tired Dave G at the top of that hill and never looked back.
